"The songs of our ancestors are also the songs of our children." - Philip Carr
This above saying shows the connection between the past and the future very nicely. We being in the present act like a mediator between the two sides and should do the duty of thanking the past i.e our ancestors for a lovely present and present the same to our children, the future.
Shradh is one way, one pure way to do the above mentioned. Shradh ceremonies are performed to remember our ancestors and get their blessings to have a better future. The Shradh days for the year 2013 is from 19th September to 4th October. This period of 16 days are called Shradh days or Pitru Paksha days. This ceremony is known by many names like Mahalaya Paksha, Sola Shraadh to name some.
Significance of Shradh ceremonies
According to Hinduism a human is born on this planet with three debts (Rin) on his shoulders, one for the Gods (Dev-rin), one for the sages and Rishis (Rishi- rin) and one for the parents and forefathers (Pitri-rin). Shradh is one such way to repay the debts and this done to please our forefathers for a blessed life that they have left behind for us. It is believed that when a person departs this world only his body is dead but the soul lives on. And it is this wandering soul that we should give salvation to (moksha). It is believed that when a soul is left the world unsatisfied it lingers without going to the netherworld, by performing the Shraddha ceremony we give the chance for the soul to attain moksha (salvation).
By performing Shradh puja one attains prosperity, good health, wealth and the blessings of their forefathers. But at the same time not performing it would land you at the mercy of the departed souls. No One wants to be on the wrong side of this and take their wrath.
Pitru Paksha Dosha is a dosha is which caused by doing the above. An unsatisfied soul will make you fall prey to unfortunate events like, misunderstanding between spouses, hurdles in career and education, failures in work no matter how much you try, problems in conceiving, miscarriages to name a few. But there are also remedies for this dosha.
